Themed Learning Communities

Pre-enrollment will begin in February 2018. To pre-enroll in one of these Themed Learning Communities, please use our online pre-enrollment form and we will enroll you in your courses before you come to orientation if you meet all of the requisites of the learning community and the courses in it.

Please note that all courses are subject to change until January 31, 2018.

Making Your Case for Law School

Interested in law school? Examine the legal profession, explore law school admissions and develop the essential  skills for success in law school and a legal career. Assignments, guest speakers and opportunities to learn outside the classroom will help you to:

  • Develop familiarity with pre-law resources at NIU and beyond
  • Achieve and maintain the high academic and personal standards required by law schools
  • Hone critical thinking skills by discussing, debating, and writing about contemporary legal and moral issues

Psychology: Growing a Mindset for Success

What motivates you? How can we motivate others? Why do some people say motivated when faced with challenges and others do not? These questions are at the heart of being successful students, leaders, teammates, parents, and employees. This Themed Learning Community engages you in critical thinking about fixed and growth mindset research and considers ways to apply these concepts.

Psychology: Explorations of Perception

Consider for a moment what you believe. How did you come to shape your beliefs? This TLC will challenge you to think critically about what you believe and discover principles of human behavior that contribute to perception. You will have an opportunity to engage in reflective writing and discussions that will challenge you to make meaning of and integrate your experience into your identity.

Rappin’ and Writin’: Prepating for Your Future Journey

Do you love music? Interested in learning more about research? This TLC will provide opportunities  to learn about research through writing and rapping. You will explore different methods for researching information and will complete a final assignment that merges your perspective of hip hop, Black English and their future goals.

Career and Major Exploration

An exciting opportunity if you are undecided-any college to explore specific majors throughout the various colleges here at NIU that might lead to the career of your choice. The TLC provides you with the opportunity to use course work to assist in your major exploration process by helping identify an appropriate major and/or college that fits your future goals!

Exploring Health Majors

If you are beginning your journey toward coming health and human service professional in the areas of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursing, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Physical Therapy, Public Health or Pre-Medical Laboratory Sciences, this TLC is for you. Blending listening and public speaking strategies (COMS 100), fundamental principles and concepts of chemistry (CHEM 110) and an introduction to the NIU community taught by a HHS Academic Advisor (UNIV 101). You will get to know fellow health and human sciences students and discover all the wonderful opportunities a major in the College of Health and Human Sciences has to offer!

Countless examples exist of individuals and entire corporations attempting to side step the rules of legitimate business engagement for their own personal and professional gains. Join us as we take a look at the trouble such actions have caused and what the outcome would have looked like if those life-altering decisions had been guided by ethical fortitude.
