Community Partners

Thanks to our community partners for making the NIU Service Leaders program a success!

  • Center for P-20 Engagement

    •  Site Description: The Center for P-20 Engagement collaborates with university and community partners to develop and promote innovations and programs that improve student success across the educational continuum. The P-20 office is located at 307 Lowden Hall.  Many of the opportunities outside NIU campus provide transportation to the events.

      Work Commitment: NIU Service Leaders will assist with events such as STEMfest, Huskie Hack, STEM Read Fall field trip, Hack for Good, NIU Destination Imagination, STEM Read Spring field trip.  Students will also assist with day-to-day operations such as social media, posting flyers on campus, event preparation, and collaboration with STEM Outreach team as needed.  Several events are on the weekend so weekend availability is necessary.  

  • Clinton Rosette Middle School

    • Site Description: The middle school is located at 650 N 1st St, DeKalb, IL 60115.   If you choose to use the Huskie Line, the closest drop off to CRMS is bus stop #9 on Route 7 around time point :10 of every hour (http://www.huskieline.com/7.html).  School hours are 7:45-2:30 p.m.  Most afterschool programing is 2:30-3:50 p.m. on Thursdays.  

      Work Commitment: NIU Service Leaders will assist by working with youth to encourage civic engagement activities, mentoring, and one-on-one tutoring.  Students will assist with opportunities during school and afterschool.  Background check is required to work at CRMS, and students will be guided through the process as part of their hiring paperwork at the beginning of the program.  Students are expected to start no later than mid-September. 

  • LEED Jerry L. John’s Literacy Clinic

    • Site Description: The Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic provides literacy support for youth kindergarten through grade 12.  The Literacy Clinic is located 10 minutes away from NIU at 3100 Sycamore Road, Suite 2003.  If you choose to use the Huskie Line, bus route 7 will take you to the Literacy Clinic at stops #17 and #18 around time point :25 of every hour (http://www.huskieline.com/7.html).     

      Work Commitment: NIU SL will assist with programs that strengthen literacy such as providing upkeep and materials for the Little Free Libraries, events, assist front desk, and literacy tutoring through the America Reads Program.  Tutoring is 4-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Each child is matched with a tutor that remains consistent over the course of the semester. Hours could be determined based on class schedules.  A background check and training is required to be a tutor.  

  • Sycamore High School

    • Site Description: The high school is located 15 minutes away from NIU at 427 Spartan Trail, Sycamore, IL 60178.  School hours are 7:10 (0 hour) -3:10 p.m.

      Work Commitment: NIU Service Leaders will assist by working with youth to encourage civic engagement activities, mentoring, and one-on-one tutoring.  Involvement with SHS will be during the school hours, but opportunities for afterschool involvement may be available.  An extensive background check is required to work at SHS, and students will be guided through the process as part of their hiring paperwork at the beginning of the program.  Students are expected to start no later than end of September.
