How to Apply

NIU Service Leader Eligibility

As an HSS fellow, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be currently enrolled full time as a sophomore, junior or senior
  • Be a first generation college student (neither parents have completed a 4-year degree) or be eligible for the federal Pell Grant
  • Commit approximately 5-10 hours a week to the program for the entire academic year
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Earn a passing grade in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester of the program

Application Timeline

  • Applications for 2018-19 academic year open in December 1.
  • Applications preferred deadline is March 18.
  • Interviews conducted on March 29 and March 30.
  • Program participants will be notified on April 3.

NIU Service Leader Peer Mentor Eligibility

As an NIU Service Leaders peer mentor, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a sophomore, junior or senior
  • Be able to serve as a positive role model for first-year students
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with first-year students
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Earn a passing grade in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester of the program
  • Commit approximately 5-10 hours a week to the program for the entire academic year
